MItch trashes Child Protective services in Indiana
It is a pathetic state of affairs when our Indiana child welfare system (DCS) is so inept and understaffed that 6 endangered children under their watch have died at the hands of parents or guardians. That is to say 6 we have been made aware of. To actually accept being honored for excellence and leadership to decrease the number of children in institutions or foster care, when the means to accomplish that are to ignore the problems and allow cases to go under investigated, sickens me.
In my experiences with children at risk and DCS I have often heard, “if there's food in the house there’s nothing we can do”, and ”you really need to get a lawyer and do this yourself”. Then I read on to see that DCS returned 320 million dollars to balance the budget while in the mean time they closed the Kosciusko County branch and defer people to regional offices. Gov. Mitch Daniels promised to add 800 field workers in 2005, perhaps DCS laid them off to give that money back to the state in 2009 through 2011.
When a state agency issues statements through a spokesperson instead of directly from an administrator that tells me there is a predisposed need for some sort of spin. Making references like “the trauma of being torn from a family can be as devastating as some forms of abuse and neglect”. So really, how many times must a child take a severe beating before being removed from such a home becomes less devastating? In Devin Parson’s case it was 18 times. Unfortunately the 19th was the one that killed him. So think about all the Meth arrests and the abused and neglected children that result from these people indiscriminately having sex and popping out babies when you stand back and whine about your taxes. Think about the 320 million DCS gave back when you complain about the price of a license plate. If you really want to be silent no more, why not be a little less silent about child abuse and neglect? Stop putting pressure on state and local governments to just do less and spend less and start requiring them to spend more wisely. There are some things you just can’t short change and more resources for serious investigation into child abuse and neglect is one of them.
